Día de los Muertos in San Diego 2013

Día de los Muertos, as I understand it, is a primarily Mexican holiday that's also been adopted by other cultures to commemorate and celebrate loved ones who have passed.

While there is an inevitable sadness in seeing the tributes by the living to the dead, there is a certain joy and exuberance to Día de los Muertos celebrations that starkly contrast many of the more somber traditions found around the world to honor the dead.

I am enriched by attending these festivals, and I think they're a fascinating and beautiful glimpse into a culture not my own.

Here are some Día de los Muertos celebrations taking place in and around San Diego in 2013:

Saturday, October 26th - Rancho Guajome Adobe in Vista

Sunday, October 27th - Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside

Friday, November 1st - Escondido (scroll to 2nd event on page)

Friday November 1st - NTC Liberty Station in Point Loma

Friday, November 1st - Oceanside Museum of Art

Saturday & Sunday, November 1st & 2nd - Old Town

Saturday, November 2ndSuzie's Farm

Sunday, November 3rd - Sherman Heights Barrio District

Hope you'll get a chance to take one in.
